QR Code Size Guide: Minimum Sizes for Print, Packaging, and Signage
The Golden Rule
A QR code should be at least 2cm x 2cm (0.8in x 0.8in) for reliable scanning at arm's length. But the right size depends on scanning distance.
Size by Scanning Distance
The formula: QR code size = scanning distance ÷ 10
| Scanning Distance | Minimum QR Size | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| 25cm (10in) | 2.5cm (1in) | Business cards, product labels |
| 50cm (20in) | 5cm (2in) | Flyers, menus, packaging |
| 1m (3ft) | 10cm (4in) | Posters, table tents |
| 3m (10ft) | 30cm (12in) | Banners, yard signs |
| 10m (33ft) | 1m (3.3ft) | Billboards, building signage |
Size by Application
Business Cards
Minimum: 1.5cm x 1.5cm (0.6in)
Recommended: 2cm x 2cm (0.8in)
Place it on the back of the card with a clear call-to-action. Use QRbuild's vCard generator to encode your full contact info.
Flyers and Brochures
Minimum: 2.5cm x 2.5cm (1in)
Recommended: 3-4cm (1.2-1.6in)
Don't bury the QR code at the bottom. Place it in the upper-right quadrant where eyes naturally land.
Restaurant Menus
Minimum: 3cm x 3cm (1.2in)
Recommended: 4-5cm (1.6-2in)
Customers scan menus at varying distances. Go bigger than you think. See our restaurant QR code guide.
Posters and Signage
Minimum: 10cm x 10cm (4in)
Recommended: 15cm+ (6in+)
People scan posters from 1-3 meters away. Account for the worst case.
Product Packaging
Minimum: 1.5cm x 1.5cm (0.6in)
Recommended: 2-3cm (0.8-1.2in)
Small packaging is the hardest. Use the highest error correction level and maximize contrast.
Real Estate Signs
Minimum: 15cm x 15cm (6in)
Recommended: 20-25cm (8-10in)
Drivers and pedestrians scan from the sidewalk. Real estate QR codes need to be scannable from 3-5 meters.
What Affects Scannability
- Contrast: Dark foreground on light background. Minimum 40% contrast ratio.
- Quiet zone: Leave white space around the code equal to 4 modules wide.
- Error correction: Higher levels (H) allow smaller codes to survive damage.
- Content length: URLs with 50+ characters create denser codes that need to be larger.
PNG vs SVG for Print
Always use SVG for print. It scales to any size without pixelation. PNG works for digital use but can blur when enlarged. Create your QR code and download both formats for free.
Common Mistakes
- Printing a QR code too small on a poster (people can't scan from across the room)
- No quiet zone (the code blends into surrounding design elements)
- Low contrast colors (dark blue on black doesn't scan)
- Not testing the printed version (screen looks different than paper)
