How to Create a QR Code for WiFi (Free, No App Needed)
Why WiFi QR Codes Matter
Every time a guest visits your home, office, or business, the same thing happens: "What's the WiFi password?" You spell it out, they mistype it, you spell it again. WiFi QR codes eliminate this entirely.
One scan connects any smartphone directly to your network. No typing, no passwords shared over text, no sticky notes on the router.
How to Create a WiFi QR Code
Step 1: Open QRbuild
Go to QRbuild's free generator and select WiFi from the Content Type dropdown.
Step 2: Enter Your Network Details
- Network Name (SSID): Exactly as it appears on your router
- Password: Your WiFi password
- Encryption: WPA/WPA2 (most common), WEP, or None
- Hidden network: Check this if your SSID is hidden
Step 3: Customize the Design
Pick colors that match your brand or decor. Add a logo if it's for a business. The WiFi QR code generator supports full color customization and logo embedding.
Step 4: Download and Print
Choose PNG for quick prints or SVG for professional signage. Print it and place it where guests can easily scan.
Best Placement Ideas
- Restaurants: On each table, near the entrance, or on the menu
- Hotels: In the room, at the front desk, on key card holders
- Offices: Conference rooms, reception area, coworking spaces
- Home: Near the entrance, on the fridge, or framed in the guest room
Tips for the Best Results
Double-check the SSID. It must match exactly — including capitalization and spaces. "MyWiFi" and "mywifi" are different networks.
Update when you change passwords. A WiFi QR code encodes the password at creation time. If you change your password, you need a new QR code.
Test before printing. Scan with both iPhone and Android to confirm it connects.
Size matters. Print at least 3cm (1.2in) wide for reliable scanning. For wall signage, go bigger — 10cm+ is ideal.
What Happens When Someone Scans It?
The phone reads the encoded WiFi credentials and prompts the user to join the network. On most modern phones (iOS 11+, Android 10+), it connects automatically with one tap.
Security Considerations
The QR code contains your password in encoded (not encrypted) text. Anyone who scans it gets your password. For guest networks, this is fine. For sensitive networks, consider:
- Using a separate guest network
- Changing the password periodically
- Limiting guest network bandwidth
